Furniture – Silver – Old Master paintings – 19th and 20th Century paitings

Gregory’s Casa d’Aste presents Auction 93 – Dimore, the upcoming appointment dedicated to antiques in Bologna, bringing together silver, Old Master paintings, furniture, and 19th and 20th century paintings from a Bolognese residence, assembled and preserved over time. The catalogue offers a coherent and well-structured selection, in which the quality of the works is matched by a collection built with continuity.

The silver section stands out for its breadth and variety, offering a wide range of objects related to the table, service, and formal display. The selection includes cutlery services, trays and salvers, bowls and centrepieces, stands, candelabra, salt cellars, sugar bowls, and serving accessories. Also included are items intended for both everyday and ceremonial use, reflecting a long-established culture of the table. Alongside these are more decorative elements, such as the pair of silver pheasants and the articulated fish, in which the quality of casting and chasing results in particularly refined workmanship.

Within this collection, dedicated to the antiques market in Bologna, the presence of international silver introduces an additional level of quality, with English sterling silver pieces attributable to makers such as Mappin & WebbWalker & Hall, and Elkington & Co., alongside European and American productions. Among these, the pair of trays by Tiffany & Co. contributes to defining a section that is rich and well articulated in terms of typologies, functions, and provenance.

The antique furniture section presents a varied and coherent ensemble, reflecting a stratification of tastes and craftsmanship between the 17th and 19th centuries. The catalogue brings together furniture of different types – including storage pieces, tables, and service furniture – attributable to Emilian, Lombard, and Venetian contexts, alongside elements that testify to a broader circulation of models and decorative solutions. The presence of furniture groupings and complementary pieces helps to recreate, as a whole, a layered domestic setting, where craftsmanship and functionality coexist in balance.

Of particular interest is the fragment of papier peint “Les Ports de France” by the Dufour manufactory, executed at the end of the 18th century: part of the decorative cycle originally conceived to cover the entire dining room of the residence.

The Old Master paintings section is structured around a particularly significant core, consisting of four canvases by a Venetian Master of the 18th century – Rebecca at the WellEsther Fainting before King AhasuerusMoses and the Pharaoh’s Daughter, and The Banquet of Esther and Ahasuerus. These are complemented by a notable presence of religious painting, alongside a secular component including landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes, forming a varied panorama across Venetian, Emilian, and Northern European contexts, further enriched by the diversity of supports and techniques.

The 19th and 20th century paintings section is broad and well defined, with a particularly significant nucleus formed by the works of Luigi Bertelli, including the figure paintings Brindisi and The Juggler, both supported by bibliographic references, alongside Marsh Landscape (1905) and Country View, illustrating the range of his production between figure and landscape. This group is complemented by the Oriental Scene with Figures and Horses by Alberto Pasini and the Oriental Landscape with Bedouin and Camel by Fabio Fabbi.

The landscape component extends from Venice by Beppe Ciardi to Horses by the River by Ruggero Panerai, and up to the Stormy Landscape by a 19th-century English Master, each reflecting distinct approaches and sensibilities. The figure and portrait section is further represented by Boy by Ettore Cercone, the Portrait of Ugo Bassi, and portraits by Adolfo De Maria, while a drawing by Giovanni Boldini, recorded in the literature, introduces a particularly significant graphic presence.

The catalogue is completed by decorative arts and objects, including table services – Pirken HammerCrown DucalRichard-Ginori – art glass such as the vase by Muller Frères, and pietra dura panels from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, alongside decorative objects from Europe and the East, forming a varied yet coherent selection in terms of techniques and craftsmanship, within the context of an antiques auction in Bologna of particular interest.
