The Modern and Contemporary Art Department of Gregory’s Auction House is one of our flagship departments. The department’s activity is dedicated to the selection and enhancement of 20th-century and contemporary artworks, carefully overseeing every stage of the process that leads an artwork from consignment to its presentation at auction.

Each artwork entrusted to us undergoes a thorough analysis that takes into account provenance, bibliography and collecting context. At the same time, a constant comparison with developments in the art market enables us to formulate accurate estimates consistent with the most recent auction results, identifying the most appropriate positioning for each work. The department also agrees a reserve price with the owner, defined on the basis of the artwork’s characteristics and market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value during the sale.

A fundamental part of our activity is also dedicated to the direct examination of artworks. The observation of materialsexecution techniques and condition allows us to deepen our understanding of each work, also through diagnostic tools such as the Wood’s lamp, which is useful for identifying any restorations or conservation treatments. When necessary, contacts are also established with artists’ archives and foundations for documentary research and archiving procedures, assisting consignors in obtaining the appropriate certifications to best enhance the value of their works.

Indeed, many of the lots offered at auction come from private collections, preserved for long periods within family collections and residences. Bringing these works back to the attention of the market, while highlighting their provenanceand collecting history, represents one of the most significant aspects of our activity.

In addition, alongside the study and preparation of artworks, the department supports clients with a careful and comprehensive service, ranging from cataloguing to the preparation of detailed condition reports.

Even after the sale, Gregory’s Auction House continues to assist its clients in the stages following the hammer fall, providing shipping quotations and the organisation of transport, entrusted to a network of specialist fine art shipping companies that have collaborated with us for many years, with worldwide shipping available. Assistance with export procedures completes the service. Consequently, the Modern and Contemporary Art Department offers buyers comprehensive support.

The Modern and Contemporary Art catalogues feature works ranging from the historical avant-gardes and Informal and Abstract painting of the post-war period to the most recent artistic research, offering a broad and articulated overview of 20th- and 21st-century artistic production.

As far as the Italian scene is concerned, particular attention is devoted to the protagonists of some of the most significant periods of 20th-century art. This panorama is further enriched by artists such as Filippo De PisisMattia Moreni with Un’anguria americana assassinata sul campo (1969), Salvo with La Valle (1989), Renato Guttuso, whose Bassotto (1958) is also noteworthy, and Pino Pascali with Progetto di Balena (1966), as well as Xavier Bueno, Gianni Dova, Giovanni Frangi, Emilio Scanavino, Tonelli and Maurizio Cattelan.

Beyond the Italian scene, our auctions include works by international artists who have shaped the history of 20th-century and contemporary art. These are complemented by works by Victor Vasarely, including Omega (1956), as well as works by Roberto Sebastián Matta, such as Ultima Cena (1978), and artists including Paul Jenkins, André Lanskoy, René Magritte, Arman, Marc Chagall and Hermann Nitsch, representative of the principal international artistic movements and research of the 20th century.

A prominent place is also devoted to artists connected with Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region, an artistic tradition of great importance within the Italian 20th-century landscape. In particular, among the most significant works presented in our auctions are the drawing Conchiglie (1932) by Giorgio Morandi, sold for €35,960, the sculpture Due Figure (1962) by Luciano Minguzzi, sold for €25,000, and Spettacolo ortogonale (1968) by Concetto Pozzati, sold for €15,000. Completing the regional panorama are artists such as Nanni, Pompilio Mandelli, Sergio Romiti and Cleto Tomba, who contributed to the vitality of the local artistic scene.

Finally, the acquisition of works from important private collections has enabled the auction house to build, over time, a clientele of collectors at both national and international level, offering consignors the opportunity to present their artworks to a broad and qualified audience capable of generating competition at auction and achieving significant sale results.
