The Jewellery and Precious Items Department of Gregory’s Auction House is dedicated to a category that has always combined elegance and desirability. The department focuses on the selection and enhancement of antique, modern and contemporary jewellery, carefully guiding each piece through every stage leading up to its auction sale. The Auction House also agrees upon a reserve price with the owner, established according to the characteristics of the jewel and current market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value.

Jewellery auctions span a wide chronological range, united by one fundamental element: the quality of materials and craftsmanship. Jewellery is an object that transcends time, capable of changing in meaning and interpretation according to the person who wears it, while preserving its intrinsic value.

Alongside the study of each piece, Gregory’s provides a comprehensive service that includes accurate cataloguing and the preparation of condition reports. These are essential aspects for ensuring a clear and transparent presentation at auction.

The service continues after the sale, with assistance throughout the post-auction process, including shipping quotations and transport arrangements through specialised operators, with worldwide shipping available. The service is completed by support with export procedures, which are particularly important for an international clientele.

The selections offered include gold and silver jewellery, diamonds, precious gemstones and pearls. They encompass both classical creations and more modern designs, with particular attention paid to provenance and condition. The pieces presented at auction come primarily from private collections, often assembled over time with consistency and discernment.

Within this context, the auction dedicated to the Fontana family, entitled “A Century of Jewellery”, deserves special mention. Conceived as a tribute to a historic Bolognese jewellery-making tradition, the sale represented an important moment for the department, helping to highlight a local production of exceptional quality and to strengthen interest in jewellery as an expression of taste and identity.

Over the years, the department has achieved significant results across different categories of jewellery. Among high jewellery rings, a particularly important example was a yellow gold ring set with a Colombian emerald and diamonds, featuring a central gemstone surrounded by brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, sold for €18,600.00. Also noteworthy are creations by Gino Fontana, including the “Glicine” ring, which achieved €3,690.00.

Alongside rings, diamond jewellery has also attracted considerable interest. Among these was an elegant white gold necklace set with graduated brilliant-cut diamonds, crafted using traditional hand-finishing techniques, demonstrating the market’s appreciation for refined and highly luminous compositions.

Among signed jewellery and bracelets, highlights include a Bulgari 18 kt gold and diamond bracelet, sold for €10,625.00, together with an elegant sapphire and diamond bracelet, which achieved €4,500.00. Equally noteworthy is the Trabert & Hoeffer – Mauboussin 14 kt gold brooch, sold for €7,500.00, as well as an elegant platinum floral brooch embellished with old-cut diamonds. A fine example of classical high jewellery, it stands alongside Gino Fontana’s “Ventaglio” brooch-pendant, which realised €3,690.00.

Further notable results include a parure comprising a necklace and matching topaz earrings, together with an elegant 18 kt yellow gold tubular necklace terminating in a serpent’s head. These pieces confirm the enduring appeal of decorative jewellery with strong aesthetic impact.

Through a careful process of research, valuation and enhancement, the department creates high-quality selections capable of engaging a knowledgeable and specialised audience. The trust placed in Gregory’s by collectors, combined with the effective presentation of each lot, enables the Auction House to reach collectors and buyers both in Italy and abroad, encouraging competitive bidding during auctions.
