The Watches Department of Gregory’s Auction House is dedicated to the selection and enhancement of antique and collectible timepieces, offering a diverse selection that includes wristwatches, pocket watches, pendulum clocks, wall clocks, officer clocks and night clocks, primarily sourced from private collections and family estates. These objects tell far more than the passage of time. They reflect taste, craftsmanship, decorative styles and, often, personal and family stories passed down through generations.
It is precisely this variety that makes the field particularly fascinating. Within its watch auctions, Gregory’s presents a diverse selection capable of attracting both collectors searching for rare and unusual examples and enthusiasts drawn to design.
The department’s activity spans a broad chronological period, ranging from the earliest productions to examples from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As a result, it offers an overview of the evolution of the mechanics of timekeeping. Every watch or clock entrusted to us is carefully examined, taking into account its typology, materials, technical characteristics, condition, provenance and historical context whenever available.
In addition, this research is supported by constant monitoring of the market for antique and collectible watches and clocks, allowing the department to establish accurate estimates based on recent auction results. Furthermore, a reserve price is agreed with the consignor, taking into account both the characteristics of the object and current market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value during the sale.
An important part of the department’s work is the direct examination of each piece. The analysis of movements, cases and dials allows us to better understand the characteristics of every timepiece and assess its condition with precision. Moreover, it often reveals those details that make the difference between a decorative object and a piece of genuine collecting interest.
Alongside the study of each lot, Gregory’s supports clients throughout every stage of the auction process, from the preparation of detailed condition reports to post-sale assistance. This includes support for shipping and transportation through specialised operators, both within Italy and internationally.
Over the years, the department has presented a significant selection of watches and clocks at auction, representing European production from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Among the most notable results are an eighteenth-century Sicilian cartel clock signed “Piero Cutrera Palmo”, sold for €4,216, and a large nineteenth-century French gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock, sold for €4,712. In addition, a gilt bronze garniture set composed of a clock and candelabra with a movement signed “Popon à Paris” achieved €5,580.
Other noteworthy examples include a rare eighteenth-century English tower clock, an elegant French garniture set featuring Sèvres porcelain elements, and a refined nineteenth-century gilt bronze mantel clock with female figures. Together, these pieces illustrate the variety of types and decorative styles regularly presented by the department.
Among the most recent top lots are also two Rolex wristwatches: an Air King “Super Precision” and an Oysterdate Precision reference 6694. This confirms the growing interest not only in antique horology, but also in selected twentieth-century wristwatches that are increasingly appreciated by the market.
The acquisition of watches and clocks from private collections has enabled Gregory’s to build, over time, a network of collectors and enthusiasts both in Italy and abroad who are particularly attentive to this category. It is precisely this combination of curiosity, taste and competition that makes watch auctions such a dynamic field, helping each timepiece achieve its full value according to its character, rarity and appeal.
