The Antique Furniture and Furnishings Department of Gregory’s Auction House is one of the historic sectors of our business, dedicated to antique furniture and decorative objects. Our antiques auctions in Bologna represent a point of reference for collectors, enthusiasts and consignors, bringing together quality, tradition and the market.

The department’s activity spans a wide chronological period, from the Renaissance to the early decades of the 20th century, encompassing the principal categories of antique furniture and antiques. Furthermore, each piece is carefully studied, taking into consideration its provenance, construction techniques, materials and historical-artistic context. These elements are fundamental for a correct valuation and appropriate market positioning. The process is further supported by the supervision of a specialist expert in the field. Furthermore, the department agrees a reserve price with the owner, defined on the basis of the characteristics of the object and market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value during the sale.

In particular, a central aspect of our work concerns the direct examination of furniture. The study of wood species, marquetry, decorative techniques and construction details allows us to gain a deeper understanding of each piece and accurately assess its condition, identifying any restorations or later interventions.

Likewise, many of the antique furniture pieces and furnishings offered in our auctions come from private collections and historic residences. As a result, tracing their provenance and context means restoring a story to each object. In this way, its journey can be highlighted, making it even more appealing and recognisable in the eyes of the market.

Moreover, the department also specialises in the valuation and management of furniture and assets originating from entire residences and private homes. This includes complete collections of furniture, objects and artworks preserved within the same context, both in Bologna and throughout Italy.

At the same time, alongside the study and preparation of the pieces, the department supports clients with a careful and comprehensive service, ranging from lot cataloguing to the preparation of detailed condition reports, with the aim of enhancing the value of every item entrusted to us.

In addition, Gregory’s services include the organisation of shipping and transportation through specialist operators, with delivery available both in Italy and abroad. Assistance with export procedures is also provided whenever required. Consequently, buyers can rely on attentive and continuous support, designed to provide an orderly and seamless experience even after the auction.

Meanwhile, our antique furniture and antiques auctions present a selection that spans the principal stylistic periods of European furniture. The catalogues feature High Period furnitureBaroque and Rococo furnishingsNeoclassical antiques, 19th-century furniture, and pieces from the Art Nouveau period.

For example, among the most sought-after categories are chests of drawers, bureau cabinets, tables, cabinets, sideboards and writing desks, as well as seating, mirrors, chandeliers and decorative elements. As a result, these objects continue to attract the interest of a broad and diverse audience.

Over the course of our auctions, furniture of particular historical and collecting interest has been offered. Among these are a pair of 18th-century Genoese torchères in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, sold for €19,200; a chest of drawers with upper section veneered in carob and walnut wood, sold for €18,750; and a 19th-century walnut fireplace from the Emilia region, sold for €17,980. In addition, these are accompanied by a carved walnut canopy bed, a pair of polychrome painted and lacquered wooden benches, and several chests of drawers with upper sections from the Veneto and Emilia regions dating to the 18th century.

Among the most representative objects are also a 17th-century Bolognese San Filippo writing desk, a six-light Russian gilt-bronze chandelier, a French table veneered in feather mahogany, and a pair of French consoles with Portoro marble tops. Moreover, a pair of carved and gilded wooden consoles decorated with garlands and leafy festoons, produced in Tuscany between the late 18th and early 19th century, achieved notable results. Also noteworthy is a lacquered wood console with a red marble top and obelisk-shaped legs decorated with gilded palmettes, dating from the same period.

Furthermore, the sales have also featured furniture and objects of remarkable decorative value, such as a monumental mirror from the Emilia-Tuscany area dating to the first half of the 17th century, sold for €8,125, as well as veneered and inlaid tables with polychrome marble decoration. Together, these results demonstrate the variety and richness that characterise the department.

Finally, over time, the inclusion at auction of furnishings from important private collections and historic residences has helped Gregory’s expand its dialogue with collectors and enthusiasts, both in Italy and abroad. Indeed, antique furniture and furnishings, particularly when linked to the Italian craft tradition, continue to attract broad interest. As a result, Gregory’s is able to engage a wide audience of collectors and enthusiasts. For this reason, the department is able to support successful sales outcomes and connect important pieces with collectors worldwide.
