The Oriental and Tribal Art Department of Gregory’s Auction House is dedicated to the selection, study and enhancement of works originating from the major artistic cultures of Asia and other non-European regions. This is a field that continues to grow, supported by an increasingly broad and international collecting interest, which in recent years has attracted not only Asian buyers but also a growing number of European and Western collectors.
The department’s activity is based on careful and qualified work that accompanies each object through every stage of the auction process: from the preliminary valuation and historical-artistic research to cataloguing and market presentation. Particular attention is devoted to authenticity, condition, and the proper contextualisation of each work, with the aim of providing clients with a reliable and transparent service. The department also agrees upon a reserve price with the consignor, determined according to the characteristics of the work and current market dynamics, in order to protect its value during the sale process.
Gregory’s Auction House continues to support clients even after the hammer falls, providing assistance throughout the post-sale process. The department assists buyers with documentation, shipping quotations and transport arrangements through a network of specialist fine art shippers, with worldwide delivery available. As part of this comprehensive and structured service, assistance is also provided with export procedures, an important aspect for works destined for international circulation.
The department handles a wide range of works spanning from antiquity to the Chinese Republican period. These include objects originating from China, Japan, India, Tibet, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Catalogues feature porcelain, bronzes, sculptures, jade, ivory, wood and hardstone objects, as well as glassware, enamels and furniture. Alongside Far Eastern art, the department also focuses on Tribal Art, including ritual objects and artefacts from the Himalayan region, Africa and Southeast Asia.
Within the field of Oriental Art, notable results include works that reflect the excellence of Chinese craftsmanship from the Imperial period through the early twentieth century. Among them are a seated bronze figure of Guanyin, China, 16th century, sold for €4,250, and an important Chinese porcelain censer from the Qing Dynasty (18th century), which achieved €6,820, demonstrating the strong market interest in high-period works.
These are complemented by a significant pair of blue and white porcelain vases from the Qing period, dating to the early twentieth century and sold for €4,000. Also noteworthy is an elegant Peking glass amphora-shaped vase, dating from the early twentieth century, which realised over €2,000.
Alongside decorative arts, the department has also presented works of remarkable visual impact and craftsmanship, including an important twelve-panel Coromandel screen, finely carved and lacquered with figurative scenes and naturalistic motifs, as well as a refined Chinese chess set complete with carved ivory pieces, both representative of the sophisticated production created for distinguished patrons.
In the field of Tribal Art, a noteworthy result was achieved by a Nepalese wooden Phurba, dating between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This confirms the market’s continuing interest in objects connected to the spiritual and ceremonial traditions of the Himalayan region. Also of particular interest is a “Tyi-Wara” headdress from the Bamana culture (Mali), an expression of the African sculptural tradition associated with agricultural rituals.
These results confirm the enduring interest in a sector that, thanks to its diversity and the dialogue between different cultures, continues to evolve within today’s art market.
Over the years, the acquisition of works from important private collections and estates has enabled the auction house to develop a network of collectors active both nationally and internationally. The very nature of the objects handled, connected to different cultures and geographical contexts, attracts a broad and global audience. This generates dynamic competition during auctions and contributes to achieving significant sales results that reflect the true market value of the works offered.
