The Art Objects Department of Gregory’s Auction House is dedicated to the selection and sale of art objects and antiques, with particular attention to works that combine quality, decorative appeal and collecting interest. In particular, the auctions are aimed at collectors, enthusiasts and curious buyers seeking rare pieces, period curiosities and objects of refined taste, expressions of the material culture of the past.

Furthermore, many of the works handled come from private collections, assembled over time with sensitivity, passion and attention to detail. Consequently, the department’s work consists of identifying and enhancing objects that, because of their quality of execution, rarity or decoration, deserve to return to the market and meet new collectors.

In particular, the selection includes a wide variety of categories: bronzes, enamels, ivories, porcelain, small furnishings, decorative objects and interior sculptures, often chosen for their ability to combine historical value, aesthetic appeal and collecting interest. Overall, this variety makes it possible to present well-structured catalogues designed for different interests.

First of all, every work is studied with care, also thanks to the support of a specialist consultant, who analyses its technical and stylistic aspects, the relevant bibliography, comparisons with similar works and market trends. Furthermore, this work makes it possible to define the correct classification of the object and to formulate a consistent valuation, designed to enhance its potential at auction as effectively as possible. Finally, the department agrees a reserve price with the owner, defined according to the characteristics of the work and market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value.

Likewise, alongside the study of the works, great importance is given to the presentation of lots in the catalogue, through accurate photographs and detailed descriptions. Indeed, these tools are essential for conveying the quality, character and uniqueness of each work. Consequently, they make it possible to attract the interest of collectors and art-market professionals, both in Italy and abroad.

Furthermore, the department assists buyers throughout every stage of the process, offering a complete service that includes condition reports, export procedures, support with shipping quotations and transport arrangements. In particular, our auction house relies on a network of specialised operators with whom it has collaborated for many years and who have specific experience in this sector.

Among the department’s most important results is an extraordinary Austro-Hungarian chess set in silver and silver-gilt, enriched with enamels and hardstones, which achieved €31,000.00, establishing itself as one of the most significant top lots.

Furthermore, within the field of sculpture and decorative objects, particular note should be made of a pair of knights in armour with jousting lances, characterised by ivory faces and rich decoration, attributed to Limoges and sold for a total of €6,875.00. Likewise, an important gilt-pastiglia relief depicting a procession of horsemen, dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, was sold for €5,000.00.

As regards furnishings and collectible objects in Neoclassical and nineteenth-century taste, particular note should be made of a refined pair of four-light gilt-bronze candelabra with figures of Winged Victory, made in France in the early nineteenth century. Overall, this is an example of notable decorative and technical quality.

Furthermore, notable results include an important celestial and terrestrial globe by Giovanni Maria Cassini, sold for €18,600.00, a rare example of cartographic and scientific production between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and an iconic Louis Vuitton travel trunk, sold for €12,400.00, an expression of exceptional craftsmanship and timeless taste.

Finally, the overview of the most significant results is completed by two gilt and chased bronze cups with Egyptian red porphyry bases, dating from nineteenth-century Rome and sold for €4,340.00. Consequently, these results confirm the market’s interest in decorative objects with historical and material appeal.

Overall, the quality of the selected objects, often an expression of European craftsmanship at its finest, is attracting increasingly strong interest from international buyers, who are particularly responsive to these categories. Furthermore, this translates into broad and targeted visibility. Finally, such visibility encourages lively bidding and results consistent with the value of the works.
