The Furniture and Antique Furnishings Department of Gregory’s Auction House is one of the historic sectors of our activity, dedicated to antique furniture and decorative furnishings. In particular, antique auctions in Bologna represent a point of reference for collectors, enthusiasts and consignors, bringing together quality, market knowledge and tradition.

To begin with, the department covers a broad chronological span, from the Renaissance to the early decades of the twentieth century, including the principal types of antique furnishings and antiques. In fact, each object is carefully studied, taking into consideration provenance, construction techniques, materials and historical-artistic context. Furthermore, these elements are essential for a correct valuation and appropriate positioning on the market, also thanks to the supervision of an expert specialising in the field. In addition, the department agrees a reserve price with the owner, defined according to the characteristics of the object and current market dynamics, in order to protect its value during the sale.

In particular, a central aspect of our work concerns the direct examination of furnishings. Indeed, the study of wood species, inlays, decorative techniques and construction elements makes it possible to analyse the characteristics of each piece of furniture in greater depth. Moreover, this examination allows us to assess its condition accurately, identifying any restorations or later interventions.

Many of the antique furniture and furnishings presented in our auctions come from private collections and historic residences. Consequently, retracing their provenance and context means restoring a history to each object. In addition, this research highlights its journey and makes it even more interesting and recognisable to the market.

Furthermore, the department specialises in the valuation and management of furniture and objects from entire residences and private homes. In this case, complete collections of furniture, objects and works housed within the same context are handled in a coordinated manner, both in Bologna and throughout Italy.

Likewise, alongside the study and preparation of the works, the department assists clients with a careful and comprehensive service. Specifically, this includes lot cataloguing and the preparation of accurate condition reports, in order to enhance each entrusted object as effectively as possible.

Additionally, Gregory’s service includes the organisation of shipping and transport, entrusted to specialised operators, with delivery available both in Italy and abroad. In the same way, assistance is provided with export procedures. As a result, buyers can rely on attentive and continuous support, designed to ensure an orderly and straightforward experience even after the auction.

Our antique furniture and antiques auctions present a selection spanning the principal stylistic periods of European furniture. In particular, the catalogues include High Period furniture, Baroque and Rococo furnishings, Neoclassical antiques and nineteenth-century furniture, through to Art Nouveau production.

Among the most sought-after types are chests of drawers, bureaux, tables, cabinets, sideboards and writing desks. Moreover, the selection includes seating, mirrors, chandeliers and decorative elements. Overall, these objects continue to attract the interest of a broad and diverse audience.

Over the course of our auctions, furnishings of particular historical and collecting interest have been presented. For example, a pair of eighteenth-century Genoese torchères in carved, lacquered and gilded wood was sold for €19,200. Furthermore, a chest of drawers with upper section veneered in carob and walnut was sold for €18,750. Similarly, a nineteenth-century Emilian walnut fireplace was sold for €17,980. Finally, these were joined by a carved walnut four-poster bed, a pair of polychrome benches in painted and lacquered wood and several chests of drawers with upper sections from the Veneto and Emilia regions, dating to the eighteenth century.

Among the most representative objects are also a seventeenth-century Bolognese San Filippo writing desk, a six-light Russian gilt-bronze chandelier and a French table veneered in flamed mahogany. In addition, these are joined by a pair of carved and gilded wooden console tables decorated with garlands and foliate festoons, made in Tuscany between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The auctions have also presented furnishings and objects of considerable decorative value. For instance, a monumental mirror from the Emilia-Tuscany area dating to the first half of the seventeenth century was sold for €8,125. Moreover, veneered tables inlaid with polychrome marbles have also been presented. All in all, these objects demonstrate the variety and richness of types that characterise the department.

Finally, over time, the inclusion in auction of furnishings from important collections and private residences has helped broaden Gregory’s dialogue with collectors and enthusiasts, both in Italy and abroad. Indeed, antique furniture and furnishings, especially when connected with the Italian craftsmanship tradition, continue to attract wide-ranging interest. Therefore, this makes it possible to reach a broad audience and to guide the sales process towards positive results.
