The work “Concentrated Sounds” fits coherently within the mature phase of the research of Carla Accardi, a central figure of Italian abstraction of the second half of the twentieth century and a leading figure of the Forma 1 group. The painting is executed in vinyl on canvas, a technique favoured by the artist for its compact chromatic rendering and for the possibility of obtaining uniform and vibrant surfaces.
From a formal point of view, the composition is constructed through sinuous and continuous white signs, arranged on a warm and neutral ground, recalling the natural tones often adopted by Accardi in the 2000s. However, these signs do not allude to a legible writing: on the contrary, they function as autonomous visual units, capable of evoking an internal rhythm. In this sense, the work can be read as a visual transposition of sound, where the pictorial gesture becomes trace, pause and repetition.
Moreover, the choice to eliminate every figurative reference reinforces the artist’s intention to involve the gaze in a pure perceptual experience, based on the balance between space, sign and colour. At the same time, the work testifies to the continuity of Accardi’s research, which, even in her later works, maintains a strong linguistic coherence.
