The Modern and Contemporary Art Department of Gregory’s Auction House is one of the leading sectors of our activity. In particular, based in Bologna, the department is dedicated to the selection and enhancement of twentieth-century and contemporary works, carefully following every stage of the process that leads a work from consignment to its presentation at auction. Furthermore, our modern and contemporary art auctions in Bologna are addressed to Italian and international collectors, enthusiasts and consignors.

First of all, every work entrusted to us undergoes an in-depth analysis that considers its provenance, bibliography and collecting context. Indeed, these elements are essential for correctly reconstructing the history of the work and assessing its potential on the market. Furthermore, constant comparison with developments in the art market enables us to formulate accurate estimates consistent with the most recent auction results, identifying the most appropriate positioning for each work. Finally, the department agrees a reserve price with the owner, defined according to the characteristics of the work and market dynamics, with the aim of protecting its value during the sale.

Likewise, a fundamental part of our activity is dedicated to the direct examination of works. In particular, the observation of materials, execution technique and condition makes it possible to deepen our understanding of each work. Furthermore, when necessary, diagnostic instruments such as a Wood’s lamp are used to identify any restorations or conservation treatments. In the most significant cases, contacts are also established with artists’ archives and foundations for documentary checks and archiving procedures. Consequently, the department can assist consignors in obtaining the appropriate certifications and in enhancing the work as effectively as possible.

Furthermore, many of the lots presented in our modern and contemporary art auctions come from private collections, often preserved for long periods within family holdings and residences. For this reason, bringing these works back to the attention of the market, while highlighting their provenance and collecting history, represents one of the most significant aspects of our activity in Bologna. At the same time, their inclusion at auction makes it possible to restore visibility to works that may be little known or have never previously appeared on the market.

Alongside the study and preparation of the works, the department assists clients with a careful and comprehensive service. In particular, assistance includes cataloguing, the preparation of photographic documentation and the drafting of accurate condition reports. Furthermore, each lot is presented through documentation designed to communicate its characteristics, quality and condition clearly.

The Modern and Contemporary Art catalogues include works connected with the historical avant-gardes, Informal and abstract painting of the post-war period, through to the most recent artistic research. In particular, the works presented include “Sabbia” (1952) by Alberto Burri, “Simmetrico Asimmetrico” (1973) by Alighiero Boetti, sold for €200,000, “ErmEstEtica HarlemArlecchino” (1996) by Luigi Ontani, sold for €65,000, and “Concetto spaziale” (1964–65) by Lucio Fontana, sold for €28,750. Furthermore, the most significant works include “Concentrati Suoni” (2006) by Carla Accardi, sold for €32,240, “Irradiante Grezzo II” (1988) by Marco Gastini and “Futurismo Rivisitato” (1967) by Mario Schifano. Finally, these are joined by works by Roberto Crippa, such as “La navicella spaziale dei miei sogni” (1963) and “Spirale” (1951).

Likewise, this overview is completed by artists such as Filippo De Pisis, Mattia Moreni with “Un’anguria americana assassinata sul campo” (1969), Salvo with “La Valle” (1989), Renato Guttuso, also represented by “Bassotto” (1958), and Pino Pascali with “Progetto di Balena” (1966). Furthermore, the catalogues have included works by Xavier Bueno, Gianni Dova, Giovanni Frangi, Emilio Scanavino, Tonelli and Maurizio Cattelan. Overall, this selection reflects the variety of artistic research developed in Italy throughout the twentieth century.

Beyond the national scene, the auctions include works by international artists who shaped the history of twentieth-century and contemporary art. In particular, notable works include “Senza titolo” (1953) by Yayoi Kusama, sold for €53,750, the celebrated screenprint “Marilyn Monroe” (1967) by Andy Warhol, sold for €48,750, “Intersuperficie curva nera” (1965–1967) by Paolo Scheggi, sold for €48,750, and “Caduta N 2” (1971) by Vladimir Veličković, sold for €43,750.

Furthermore, these are joined by works by Victor Vasarely, including “Omega” (1956), and works by Roberto Sebastián Matta, such as “Ultima Cena” (1978). Likewise, artists such as Paul Jenkins, André Lanskoy, René Magritte, Arman, Marc Chagall and Hermann Nitsch demonstrate the breadth of the principal international artistic movements of the twentieth century represented in Gregory’s auctions. Consequently, the catalogues offer an articulated comparison between Italian and international experiences.

Particular attention is also devoted to artists connected with Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region, representing an important artistic tradition within twentieth-century Italian art. For example, among the most significant works presented at our auctions are the drawing “Conchiglie” (1932) by Giorgio Morandi, sold for €35,960, the sculpture “Due Figure” (1962) by Luciano Minguzzi, sold for €25,000, and “Spettacolo ortogonale” (1968) by Concetto Pozzati, sold for €15,000. Furthermore, the regional overview is completed by artists such as Nanni, Pompilio Mandelli, Sergio Romiti and Cleto Tomba, who contributed to the vitality of the artistic scene in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna. Overall, this connection with the local area represents a significant component of the department’s identity.
