The work “Untitled” by Yayoi Kusama represents an early and significant testimony to the artist’s formative period, preceding her move to the United States.
Visually, the composition unfolds against a uniform dark background from which suspended circular forms emerge, characterised by repetitive dotted structures. However, these forms are not merely decorative; rather, they evoke cells, organic elements, or cosmic bodies, anticipating themes that would later become central to Kusama’s artistic production. Furthermore, their spatial arrangement suggests a floating and rarefied dimension in which emptiness itself assumes a structural role.
During this period, the artist was deeply influenced by personal experiences and inner visions, which translated into a pictorial language that, although still experimental, was already highly distinctive. At the same time, the emphasis on the obsessive repetition of marks foreshadows the concept of the “Infinity Nets” that would come to define her mature work.
