Created in 1970, The Spaceship of My Dreams represents a significant phase in the mature research of Roberto Crippa, a central artist in Italian art of the second half of the twentieth century.
Compositionally, the painting is structured through sharp geometric forms, controlled colour fields and a rigorous balance between solids and voids. However, while maintaining a rational structure, “The Spaceship of My Dreams” suggests a dynamic and visionary image, consistent with the title, which refers to an aerospace and dreamlike imagery, a recurring theme in the artist’s later production. In this sense, the design dimension combines with an essential narrative component, never descriptive. Moreover, the use of amiantide as a support reflects a conscious technical experimentation, widespread in the artistic context of the period.
Roberto Crippa, active since the 1940s, is known above all for his spiral works and for his contribution to the Spatialist Movement, sharing with other artists an interest in overcoming traditional painting. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, his research evolved, integrating symbolic structures and personal references, as occurs in this composition.
