The painting “Untitled” from 1962 belongs to a central phase in the production of Renato Guttuso, one of the most significant artists of twentieth-century Italian art. In these years, in fact, Guttuso developed an increasingly free and structurally complex painting, while maintaining a strong connection with reality and matter.
The work is constructed through broad colour fields and a dense painterly application, in which colour becomes the central element of the composition. However, despite the absence of a declared subject, the canvas suggests organic and natural forms, attributable to a vegetal or mineral universe, filtered through an intense expressive synthesis.
From a stylistic point of view, this “Untitled” reflects Renato Guttuso’s dialogue with European Informalism, without ever fully adhering to it. On the contrary, the artist preserves a latent figurative tension, which emerges in the internal structure of the image and in the relationship between solids and voids. Moreover, the use of greens, blues and dark earth tones contributes to creating a dynamic balance, in which the pictorial gesture appears controlled yet energetic.
Within the context of his career, Guttuso is known for having combined civil commitment and formal research, moving from social realism to more open and experimental solutions. Therefore, this work from 1962 testifies to a significant transitional phase, in which painting focuses on the autonomous strength of colour and matter.
