The sculpture “Irises and Ranunculi” (2005) by Piero Gilardi represents a fully coherent example of the artist’s celebrated research on artificial nature.
Since the 1960s, in fact, the Turin-born artist has been known for his famous “Nature Carpets”, works that anticipated reflections now central to ecology and human intervention on the environment. Subsequently, his research expanded to include participatory, political and social practices, while maintaining a constant focus on the relationship between artifice and perception.
From a visual point of view, the composition reproduces a vegetal fragment with iris and ranunculus flowers, foliage and soil. However, although the image recalls an immediate naturalism, the use of synthetic materials introduces a critical distance between reality and representation. In this sense, Piero Gilardi in “Irises and Ranunculi” highlights the contrast between lived nature and reconstructed nature, a central theme in his production.
