“Untitled”, work on paper by Mario Schifano, 1970–73.

Mario Schifano (1934-1998), “Untitled”, 1970-1973.

This work by Mario Schifano, “Untitled”, presents a composition divided into several panels. Each section features graphic studies that recall simplified landscapes, constructed through areas of colour and rapid marks.

Schifano, a central figure in the Italian art scene of the second half of the twentieth century, developed a visual language that combined painterly and graphic elements. In this case, the use of mixed media highlights his interest in experimentation. Furthermore, the panels present variations on the theme of landscape, rendered not descriptively but through lines, horizontal fields of colour, and chromatic overlays. As a result, the sheet appears as a collection of visual notes, created through methods characteristic of the artist.

The presence of annotations, coloured borders, and layered interventions reveals an open working process, which Schifano frequently employed to investigate rhythm and the relationship between form and sign. At the same time, the use of perspex as a final support helps isolate the sheet, emphasising the experimental nature of the work.

In conclusion, this “Untitled” work represents a concrete example of the artist’s preparatory phase, in which Mario Schifano explores, through different materials, the synthetic construction of landscape and the autonomous value of the sign.
