“Monocromo (Self-Portrait)” by Mario Schifano, created between 1981 and 1982, is a complete portfolio comprising eight colour silkscreens on paper. The work fully belongs to the artist’s research into the relationship between image, self-representation and serial language, all central elements in his production from the 1960s onwards.
In this series, Schifano addresses the theme of the self-portrait through a sequence of images that transform the figure of the artist into a repeated and reinterpreted subject. Seriality thus becomes an expressive tool capable of relating identity, public image and visual construction. Furthermore, the use of silkscreen printing accentuates the immediate and strongly graphic character of the compositions, in keeping with Schifano’s interest in the languages of communication, photography and the media.
Of particular interest is also the completeness of the ensemble, preserved with the original balsa wood case, the introductory text by Italo Mussa and an offset print depicting Mario Schifano, photographed by Nancy Ruspoli. Furthermore, each sheet bears on the back the artist’s signature and the edition number XXV/XXX, while the frames bear the stamp of Galleria Il Coccio – Ravenna.
