The sculpture “Mario and Daria” represents a work fully consistent with the research of Mario Ceroli, a leading figure in Italian art of the 1960s and a central figure within New Figuration and the School of Piazza del Popolo. The work presents two almost life-size figures placed frontally, in a silent and direct dialogue.
From a formal point of view, the artist uses the human profile reduced to a silhouette, eliminating every superfluous detail. However, precisely this subtraction allows attention to be focused on the physical and symbolic presence of the figures. Moreover, the wood, left visible in its grain, becomes an integral part of the expressive language, strengthening the connection between matter, space and figure.
In the 1960s, in fact, Ceroli developed a poetics based on seriality, the use of poor materials and the citation of the human body as an archetypal form. In this context, “Mario and Daria” stands out for its intimate, almost autobiographical character, but at the same time universal. The two figures, although separate, appear visually complementary, suggesting a relationship of connection, confrontation and distance.
