Created between 1982 and 1984, “Le Parche/I fiori della notte” represents one of the most intense expressions of the late production of Luciano Minguzzi. The work, a large-scale sculpture in painted wood, is composed of a group of elongated and stylized figures evoking the three Fates of classical mythology. However, Minguzzi does not propose a traditional narrative interpretation; on the contrary, he transforms the subject into a sculptural reflection on the human condition.
The figures, in fact, appear emaciated and segmented, with bodies structured by vertical rhythms and incised surfaces. Furthermore, the polychromy accentuates the contrasts and emphasizes the internal tension of the forms. As a result, the sculpture takes on an expressive character that recalls the artist’s interest in historical drama and the existential dimension, themes already present in his work since the years of his training in Bologna.
The artist, a leading figure in 20th-century Italian sculpture and a professor at the Brera Academy, developed a language combining figuration and formal synthesis. In the 1980s, however, wood became a privileged material for a harsher and more direct form of expression. Therefore, in this unique work, the mythological reference intertwines with a contemporary vision, in which myth becomes a symbol of collective destiny.
Furthermore, the presence of “Le Parche/I fiori della notte” in important exhibitions, including the Rome Quadriennale of 1986, confirms its importance within Luciano Minguzzi’s artistic career.
