Joan Miró, Godalla, work dating from 1973

Joan Miró (1893-1983), “Godalla”, 1973.

Created in 1973, “Godalla” belongs to the mature phase of the graphic production of Joan Miró, one of the leading figures of twentieth-century art. Born in Barcelona in 1893, the Catalan artist developed a personal language capable of combining Surrealism, automatic sign, and poetic freedom. Furthermore, beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, Miró pursued lithographic experimentation with particular intensity, collaborating with major European publishers and printers.

In this colour lithograph on Guarro paper, the artist constructs a dynamic composition through biomorphic forms, chromatic patches, and essential signs suspended within the white space. The intense black of the central forms interacts with touches of orange, blue, and yellow, while thin lines and gestural marks contribute to creating a vibrant and spontaneous surface.

As often occurs in the poetics of Joan Miró, the figurative reference in “Godalla” is never explicit. Nevertheless, the work suggests organic presences, symbols, and imaginary creatures that seem to emerge from a playful and visionary universe. At the same time, the composition maintains a rigorous internal balance, achieved through the relationship between solids, voids, and chromatic rhythm.

During the 1970s, Miró achieved an extreme synthesis of his language, reducing the image to a few essential yet highly evocative elements. It was precisely this ability to transform gesture, colour, and sign into a form of poetic writing that made his graphic production among the most influential and recognizable in contemporary European art.
