Created in 1971, “Broken Forms” fully testifies to the abstract research of Giulio Turcato, a central figure in Italian art of the second post-war period and among the founders of the Forma 1 group in 1947. The artist, close to the experiences of European abstraction, in fact developed a personal language based on gestural freedom, technical experimentation and strong chromatic autonomy.
In this work, executed with oil and mixed media on canvas, Turcato constructs a dynamic composition through biomorphic forms suspended on a clear and luminous background. The blue and orange shapes seem to float in the pictorial space, while rapid marks and sinuous lines cross the surface, creating rhythm and movement. Moreover, the presence of material interventions and slight tonal variations highlights the artist’s interest in painting free from naturalistic references.
In the 1970s, the period to which the painting belongs, Giulio Turcato further explored the relationship between colour, energy and visual perception. Consequently, his works take on an increasingly experimental character, in which form is not rigidly defined but appears to be in continuous transformation. The title “Broken Forms” also suggests a controlled fragmentation of space, consistent with the artist’s poetics.
While maintaining a rigorous compositional balance, the canvas conveys a strong sense of spontaneity that effectively represents Turcato’s mature production, in which sign, matter and colour become the tools of a deeply personal and recognizable abstract research.
