“Arcipelago”, created by Giulio Turcato in the early 1970s, belongs to a mature phase of the artist’s research, characterized by free, dynamic and strongly experimental painting. Born in Mantua in 1912 and active mainly in Rome, Turcato was in fact one of the central figures of Italian abstraction of the second post-war period and took part in the main avant-garde movements, from the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti to the Forma 1 Group.
In this work, the title immediately suggests the idea of autonomous elements dispersed in space, like islands immersed in a fluid and undefined environment. However, rather than representing a real landscape, Turcato constructs a mental and energetic dimension through chromatic stains, splashes and moving signs. The orange and black forms in fact emerge from the violet background with great visual intensity, creating a balance between spontaneous gesture and compositional control.
Moreover, the use of oil, acrylic and mixed media testifies to the artist’s constant desire to go beyond the traditional boundaries of painting. In the 1960s and 1970s, Turcato in fact experimented with industrial materials, unusual surfaces and bright colours, developing an immediately recognizable language.
The work also reflects the artist’s interest in dynamism, matter and the perception of space. In “Archipelago”, colour and sign become tools of visual energy and expressive freedom that still make Giulio Turcato one of the most original protagonists of twentieth-century Italian art.
