The work “Composition” by Gérard Schneider fits coherently within the mature phase of his abstract research, developed within Art Informel and European Tachisme, precisely around the years in which this work was produced.
The composition is constructed through essential colour fields and clear pictorial gestures, in which colour does not describe, but acts as an autonomous force. The intense blue background, in fact, becomes the field of tension on which black marks and broad areas of red and yellow confront one another. However, despite its apparent immediacy, the formal balance reveals a carefully calibrated structure.
The artist, a leading figure of post-war European abstraction, always conceived painting as a physical and mental act, freed from representation. For this reason, his language is based on gesture, rhythm and colour, understood as tools for expressing energy and inner movement. In this work, therefore, the mark assumes a primary function, while colour amplifies its visual impact.
Consequently, “Composition” represents a significant example of Gérard Schneider’s poetics in the 1960s, proving particularly interesting from both a historical and collecting point of view, thanks to its certain dating, autograph signature and documented gallery provenance.
