The “Composition” of 1960 represents a fully coherent example of the artistic research of Georges Mathieu, a central figure of European lyrical abstraction of the second post-war period. The work, executed in mixed media on paper, belongs to a phase of absolute maturity in the artist’s language, when the pictorial gesture assumes an autonomous and performative value.
The surface is crossed by rapid, energetic and overlapping signs, which radiate from the centre of the composition, creating a dynamic balance between solids and voids. However, despite the apparent spontaneity, Mathieu’s intervention is guided by rigorous control of rhythm and visual tension. The predominant black fields, interrupted by red, blue and yellow chromatic accents, help to structure the space without resorting to recognizable forms.
Moreover, the choice of paper as a support allows for greater executive immediacy, consistent with the artist’s poetics, founded on rapid action and controlled instinct. Consequently, the work should be read as a direct trace of the creative act, rather than as a traditional compositional construction.
From a historical point of view, Mathieu is known for having promoted a European gestural painting alternative to American Action Painting. Therefore, works such as this testify to his decisive contribution to the definition of an abstraction based on speed, sign and temporality.
