“Untitled” by Franco Guerzoni

Franco Guerzoni (1948), “Untitled”.

Among the Italian artists who, beginning in the 1970s, developed an original reflection on the theme of memory and the stratification of the image, Franco Guerzoni occupies a central position. Born in Modena in 1948, the artist initially approached the Emilian conceptual scene, also collaborating with Franco Vaccari. Subsequently, however, he directed his research toward a material language focused on the relationship between surface, time, and ruin.

In this “Untitled” work, created with mixed media and collage on paper, the poetics that made Franco Guerzoni internationally recognizable clearly emerge. The large monochrome blue surface appears crossed by tears, abrasions, and folds that evoke worn walls, deteriorated frescoes, or archaeological fragments. Furthermore, the work does not represent a real space, but rather the trace of a sedimented time, transforming matter itself into the protagonist of the composition.

The artist therefore uses paper, colour, and material interventions to construct a living and fragile surface, in which the gesture of deterioration takes on an autonomous aesthetic value. At the same time, the openings and tears interrupt the chromatic uniformity, creating unexpected depth and measured visual tensions.

The intense blue, a recurring hallmark in the production of Franco Guerzoni, also contributes to generating in “Untitled” a suspended and silent atmosphere. The result is a work that engages with painting, archaeology, and visual memory, confirming the Modenese artist’s ability to transform the surface into a place of contemplation and research.
