The composition of Filippo De Pisis, “Natura Morta”, develops horizontally and depicts a few everyday objects — fruit and a goblet — arranged on a surface close to a barely suggested seascape. However, rather than an objective description, what emerges is the desire to convey an atmospheric sensation, achieved through rapid painting composed of short and overlapping touches. Furthermore, the light and vibrant palette, dominated by blues, greys, and warm accents, contributes to creating an unstable yet balanced equilibrium.
Filippo De Pisis, poet and painter, was a central figure of twentieth-century Italian art, also close to Metaphysical painting in his early years before progressively moving toward a lyrical and intimate style of painting. In particular, during the post-war period, his research focused on still lifes and views characterized by free brushwork and a deliberately fragmentary construction. Consequently, the forms appear suspended, as if captured in a moment of transition.
