“Interior with Cocò”, oil on cardboard laid down on canvas by Filippo De Pisis, 1948.

Filippo De Pisis (1896-1956), “Interior with cocò”, 1948.

“Interno con cocò””Interior with Cocò”, created in 1948, belongs to a mature phase in the production of Filippo de Pisis, a central artist in twentieth-century Italian painting, known for his personal language, suspended between figurative tradition and expressive freedom.

The painting depicts a domestic interior defined by a few essential elements; however, at the centre of the composition emerges the figure of the parrot, a recurring subject in the artist’s imagery. In this context, the animal does not assume a narrative role, but rather becomes a point of visual balance, inserted within a space constructed through hints. In fact, the scene is rendered through rapid painting, made of short touches and chromatic overlaps, which suggest the environment without describing it analytically.

Moreover, the choice of a light support and the small dimensions confirm De Pisis’s interest in an immediate and intimate painting, far from any monumentality. At the same time, the work reflects an already consolidated style, characterized by free figuration, a calibrated use of colour and an apparently spontaneous but carefully controlled composition.
