Created between 1968 and 1969, “Natura in posa per arcobaleno quasi Italiota” represents one of the most significant works of the full artistic maturity of Concetto Pozzati, a leading figure in Italian painting of the second half of the twentieth century. The work combines compositional rigour and critical reflection on the image, a central theme in the artist’s research during those years.
First of all, the composition presents a monumental still life, constructed through a careful balance between recognizable forms and graphic stylization. However, the prevailing use of the greyscale, interrupted by the presence of the polychrome rainbow in the upper part, introduces a clear visual and conceptual contrast. Consequently, colour becomes a symbolic, not decorative, element, alluding to the relationship between reality, representation and cultural identity.
In the 1960s, in fact, Pozzati developed a strongly analytical painting, influenced by the climate of European Pop Artthat followed a debate on the function of the image in contemporary society. Moreover, the ironic reference to the “Italiot” suggests a critical reflection on the national figurative tradition, reinterpreted in a modern and conscious key.
