"Untitled", steel sculpture by Sergio Fermariello, 2008.

Sergio Fermariello (1961), “Untitled”, 2008.

This sculpture by Sergio Fermariello, entitled “Untitled”, is made of corten steel, a material particularly suited to the artist’s visual language. The steel sheet features a design created through cut-outs and shaped elements that define a network of continuous and interrupted lines. Furthermore, the material’s characteristic surface oxidation creates a uniform colour that enhances the interplay between solid and void. As a result, the image emerges not through traditional volume, but through the relationship between the cut sections and the space behind them.

Born in Naples in 1961, Fermariello is known for the recurring use of his symbolic figures, often inspired by the stylised form of the warrior, which have become the hallmark of a highly recognisable personal language.

The work presents a compact vertical structure in which the signs are arranged according to a regular rhythm. At the same time, this formal synthesis reflects the artist’s ongoing research, aimed at reducing the figure to an essential icon. Since the 1980s, Fermariello has developed a repertoire of recurring signs that he has applied across a variety of media and materials.

In conclusion, “Untitled” by Sergio Fermariello represents a significant example of his working method, combining linear design, material cutting, and the creation of a symbolic image fully consistent with his artistic production.
