“Zelda” by Antonio Bueno, created in 1982, belongs to the mature phase of the artist’s research, characterised by an essential figurative language suspended between irony, memory and a refined formal simplification. In particular, the female figure is constructed through clearly defined volumes, compact surfaces and a strong emphasis on the synthesis of the image, all central elements in Bueno’s artistic language.
In “Zelda”, the face assumes an almost iconic presence, conveyed through a limited number of selected elements and a carefully balanced relationship between form and colour. Furthermore, the use of oil on Masonite helps define a compact and controlled surface, consistent with the formal precision typical of the artist during these years. Consequently, the work immediately conveys that suspended dimension between portrait and mental image that characterises a significant part of Bueno’s production.
Particular importance is also attached to the archival documentation. This helps define the history of the work with clarity. Indeed, the painting bears on the back the archive number “AByR n. 773” and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity on photograph issued by the Archivio Antonio Bueno, indicating the archive number, title, technique, dimensions, date and provenance. Furthermore, the provenance from Galleria d’Arte Forni – Bologna, Raccolta d’Arte Nino Lucchi – Cesena and subsequently a private collection – Cervia adds further interest to the collecting history of the work.
