“Ladies & Gentlemen” by Andy Warhol belongs to one of the most significant series of the artist’s production of the 1970s. Created in 1975, the series originated from a project dedicated to figures from New York’s underground scene and, through the immediate and serial language of Pop Art, explores themes related to identity, representation and the construction of the image.
In “Ladies & Gentlemen”, Warhol transforms the portrait into an image of strong visual impact, relying on intense fields of colour and sharp contrasts. Silkscreen printing thus becomes a tool capable of emphasising the face and presence of the subject, suspended between individuality and icon. The series represents one of the moments in which Warhol most clearly brought to the centre of his artistic research figures from social and cultural contexts that had until then been little represented in official art.
The work was printed by Alexander Heinrici, New York, and published by Luciano Anselmino, Milan, a central figure in the dissemination of Warhol’s graphic work in Europe. Furthermore, the sheet is documented in the reference bibliography devoted to the artist’s prints, “Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonné 1962-1987”, Feldman/Schellmann, fourth edition revised and expanded by Frayda Feldman and Claudia Defendi.
