“Apple”, silkscreen by Andy Warhol dating to 1985.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987), “Apple”, 1985.

“Apple” is a colour silkscreen by Andy Warhol, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a key figure in international Pop Art. The work belongs to the mature phase of his graphic production, when Warhol focused his attention on symbols of visual culture and technological consumption.

The subject, a stylized apple crossed by horizontal chromatic bands, directly recalls the famous Apple logo, which in the 1980s became an emblem of computer innovation and the new digital aesthetic. However, the artist does not offer a celebratory representation. On the contrary, through the silkscreen technique, the image is reduced to an icon, deprived of depth and transformed into a reproducible sign, consistently with his reflection on seriality and the role of the media.

From a formal point of view, the composition is essential yet rigorous. The colour, applied in clear fields, assumes a structural function, while the background helps to isolate the subject, making it immediately recognizable. Moreover, the presence of the autograph signature and numbering confirms that the work belongs to a controlled edition, printed by Aetna Silkscreen Products and published by Factory Additions.

Finally, the inclusion of the work in Andy Warhol’s official Catalogue Raisonné attests to its historical and collecting importance. “Apple” represents an effective synthesis of the Warholian poetics of the later years, where art, technology and the market converge in a single symbolic image.
