The work “Azulejo” by Aldo Mondino represents a perfect balance between irony, culture, and tradition. The piece evokes the historic Iberian azulejo technique, reinterpreted through the conceptual wit and playful spirit that have always characterized the work of the Turin-born artist. In this composition, Mondino combines graphic and figurative motifs linked to the world of the Spanish corrida, alternating scenes of matadors and heraldic symbols with letters and signs repeated rhythmically, almost forming a visual alphabet.
Mondino was one of the leading figures of Italian conceptual art in the second half of the twentieth century. His artistic vision, constantly poised between quotation and experimentation, drew inspiration from different cultures, travels, and visual languages. In “Azulejo”, he brings together irony and memory, using the luminous ceramic surface as a meeting point between East and West, between popular art and contemporary reflection.
Furthermore, the skilful use of red and blue not only recalls the symbolism of Spain but also suggests a dialogue between passion and control, gesture and form. In this way, every detail contributes to transforming decorative tradition into a sophisticated and contemporary narrative, capable of both engaging and provoking reflection.
