Two porcelain figurines by Meissen and European Manufacture, 20th century

Meissen and European Manufacture, Two porcelain figurines, 20th century.

These two porcelain figurines, attributed to Meissen and to a European manufacture of the 20th century, represent an interesting example of decorative production. It is inspired by the great eighteenth-century tradition of figurative porcelain. The Meissen manufacture, founded in Saxony at the beginning of the eighteenth century, played a central role in the development of European porcelain, establishing itself through technical quality, refined modelling, and the richness of its polychrome decoration.

The group includes two figures of different character. The first, in the background, depicts a young female figure with a harp, conceived according to an elegant and musical taste close to the decorative repertoire of allegorical and gallant figures. The second instead represents a male figure in traditional dress, with a red headdress, boots, and accessories held in his hands. In this case, the frontal pose and the simplified rendering of the clothing give the figurine a more popular and narrative character.

Furthermore, the polychromy clearly distinguishes the two subjects: delicate tones and floral motifs characterize the female figure, while stronger colours such as blue and red define the male figure. However, both works retain a predominantly decorative function, typical of twentieth-century collectible porcelain.
