Furniture – Art Objects – Old Masters – 19th and 20th Century Paintings – Sculptures

On Friday 13 November 2026, Gregory’s Auction House presents a new antiques and paintings auction in Bologna, with a catalogue bringing together antique furniture, sculptures, ceramics, works of art and a significant selection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century, with particular attention to the Bolognese artistic tradition. The auction will be divided into two sessions, at 10:30 and 15:00.

First Session – Furniture, Works of Art, Ceramics

The first session, at 10:30, presents a selection of Italian and European antique furniture, with particular attention to Emilian and Venetian production between the 17th and 19th centuries. Among the most representative examples are 17th-century walnut cassapanche, an Emilian chest of drawers, a lacquered hall bench with a count’s coat of arms, carved and gilt console tables, 18th-century seating and mirrors. Of particular importance is a pair of early 19th-century étagères from Ferrara, featuring an unusual octagonal structure with a revolving obelisk-shaped upper section, an example of a refined approach to furniture design. The selection extends to 19th-century European production, with English and French furniture, and also includes an Oriental opium bed from the late 19th century, with marble panels and carved decorations.

Alongside the furniture, there is an extensive selection of ceramics and works of art, representing different artistic and manufacturing traditions.

Second Session – Old Master Paintings, Drawings, 19th and 20th Century Paintings, Sculptures

The second session, at 15:00, brings together a selection of wooden and marble sculptures, Old Master paintings and works from the 19th and 20th centuries, representing the main Italian and European schools of painting. The sculpture section includes works from different periods and artistic traditions, including a pair of column-bearing lions, while the selection of paintings ranges from sacred and mythological subjects to genre scenes and landscape painting.

Among the most important paintings is “The Sorceress Circe”, a large canvas attributed to Pietro Paolo Raggi, formerly belonging to the Angelo Costa Collection in Genoa, a significant example of Baroque mythological painting. The 18th century is represented by a “Pastoral Scene” by a Venetian Master and two large compositions depicting “Architectural Scenes with Figures”, attributed to the circle of Pietro Paltronieri, known as il Mirandolese, in which the taste for architectural capriccio is combined with scenographic and perspectival research. The section is enriched by works depicting sacred subjects, genre scenes, including a canvas from the workshop of David Teniers, and still lifes, with a floral composition by Francesco Lavagna.

A particularly interesting group is dedicated to Bolognese artists and Emilian painting, with works documenting different periods of the local figurative tradition, from the 18th to the 20th century. Among the paintings, “The Return from Confirmation” (1871) by Gaetano Palazzi stands out, an important previously unpublished work of Bolognese genre painting, documented in the Belluzzi Photographic Album preserved at the Museo Civico del Risorgimento in Bologna. The drawing tradition is represented by Gaetano Gandolfi, with “Pallas Athena Saves Cornix from Poseidon”, accompanied by an expert opinion by Donatella Biagi Maino, and by Antonio Basoli, represented by two architectural compositions. The selection continues into the 20th century with works by Carlo Corsi and Garzia Fioresi, while Emilian painting is represented by the landscapes of Giuseppe Graziosi, including “Avenue” and “Farmhouse with Trees” (1915). Works by Henry Voordecker and Giacomo Bergomi complete the overview of 19th and 20th-century painting.

The section dedicated to Old Master drawings and engravings also includes a “Study of Heads” by Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavalier d’Arpino, and a collection of etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Overall, the catalogue reflects the collecting taste of historic residences through a diverse selection of furniture, works of art and paintings from different periods and origins.
