The Art Objects Department of Gregory’s Auction House is dedicated to the selection and sale of art objects and antiques, with particular attention to works that combine quality, decorative appeal and collectible interest. Our auctions are aimed at collectors, enthusiasts and curious buyers in search of rare pieces, historical curiosities and refined artifacts capable of telling the story of the material culture of the past.
Many of the works handled by the department come from private collections, assembled over time with sensitivity, passion and attention to detail. The department’s role is to identify and enhance objects that, because of their craftsmanship, rarity or decorative qualities, deserve to return to the market and find new collectors.
The selection includes a wide variety of categories: bronzes, enamels, ivories, porcelain, small furnishings, decorative objects and interior sculptures, often chosen for their ability to combine historical value, aesthetic appeal and collectible interest.
Each work is carefully researched, with the support of a specialist consultant, who examines its technical and stylistic characteristics, relevant bibliography, comparison with similar works and current market trends. This process allows the department to accurately define the object’s historical and artistic context and to formulate a reliable valuation designed to maximize its potential at auction. The department also agrees upon a reserve price with the consignor, established according to the characteristics of the work and current market conditions, with the aim of protecting its value.
Alongside research and evaluation, great importance is given to the presentation of each lot in the catalogue through professional photography and detailed descriptions. These are essential tools for conveying the quality, character and uniqueness of every object and for attracting the attention of collectors and industry professionals both in Italy and abroad.
The department supports buyers throughout every stage of the process, offering a complete service that includes condition reports, export procedures, shipping quotations and transport arrangements. Our activity relies on a network of trusted operators with whom we have collaborated for many years and who are highly experienced in this field.
Among the department’s most notable results is an extraordinary Austro-Hungarian chessboard in silver and gilt silver, enriched with enamels and hardstones, which achieved €31,000, establishing itself as one of the department’s most important top lots.
In the field of sculpture and decorative works, noteworthy results include a pair of armoured knights with tournament lances, featuring ivory faces and richly decorated details, sold for a total of €6,875 including buyer’s premium. Also significant is a gilt pastiglia bas-relief depicting a procession of horsemen, dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, which achieved €5,000.
Among decorative and collectible objects of Neoclassical and nineteenth-century taste, an elegant malachite and gilt-bronze garniture comprising a clock and a pair of wine coolers, dating to the first half of the nineteenth century, stands out alongside a refined pair of four-light gilt-bronze candelabra with Winged Victory figures, French work from the early nineteenth century, both examples of exceptional decorative and technical quality.
Other noteworthy top lots include an important celestial and terrestrial globe by Giovanni Maria Cassini, sold for €18,600, a rare testimony to cartographic and scientific production between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and an iconic Louis Vuitton travel trunk, which achieved €12,400, representing outstanding craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
Completing this selection of important results is a refined gilt and lacquered chinoiserie bronze inkwell with river scene, French work from the eighteenth century, together with a pair of gilt and chased bronze cups on Egyptian red porphyry bases, produced in Rome during the nineteenth century and sold for €4,340, confirming the market’s continued interest in decorative objects of historical and artistic significance.
The quality of the selected works, often expressions of European artisanal excellence, continues to attract growing interest from international collectors, who are particularly receptive to these categories of objects. This translates into broad and targeted visibility, encouraging active bidding and auction results that reflect the true value of each work.
