QuesThis important alms basket represents an interesting example of Italian decorative manufacture in which artisanal tradition and silversmithing intervention coexist in refined balance. The original structure, made of wood and woven wicker, in fact recalls ancient liturgical and processional containers. These were used between the 19th and 20th centuries, intended for collecting offerings during religious celebrations or solemn occasions.
Subsequently, in the mid-20th century, the work was embellished by the intervention of the silversmith Enea Stefani, known for historicist-style workmanship and for his attention to the executive quality of ornamental elements. In this case, Stefani enriched the object with applications in silver, vermeil, polychrome enamels and hardstones, transforming a functional object into a piece of fine decoration.
Particularly significant is the metal lattice decoration that wraps around the body of the basket, punctuated by small floral motifs and culminating in the central enamelled medallion with monogram. Moreover, the pierced lid and the wide handle highlight careful workmanship, characterized by chased details and eclectic-style finishes. The combination of different materials also contributes to creating a strong visual contrast between the natural weave of the wicker and the brilliance of the metal mounts.
For these characteristics, the work fits within the context of 20th-century Italian decorative arts, while nevertheless maintaining an evident reference to liturgical tradition and historical goldsmithing. Moreover, its provenance from an important Bolognese private collection increases its collecting and documentary interest.
