“Composition” by Sergio Romiti, created in 1967, is a precise example of one of the most mature phases of the Bolognese artist’s research. The work belongs to the period in which Romiti developed an abstract and structured painting, founded on rigorous relationships between light, surface, and compositional rhythm. However, his abstraction is never cold or detached; rather, it is built upon a continuous tension between control and painterly vibration.
The composition unfolds through dark tonal fields and subtle gradations that suggest a central verticality, while variations of grey and black generate a dynamic perception of space. Furthermore, the dense yet measured application of colour contributes to the creation of a depth that is not perspectival, but rather mental and perceptual. As a result, the work invites the viewer to engage in a slow and attentive reading, based on the observation of surfaces and their internal relationships.
Trained within the cultural environment of post-war Bologna, Sergio Romiti developed a personal language that entered into dialogue with European Informal painting while maintaining a strong expressive independence. Therefore, works such as “Composition” reflect a coherent artistic investigation, far removed from narrative solutions and deeply focused on the essential nature of the pictorial act itself.
