"Spirali" by Roberto Crippa, Italian abstract painting with dynamic spiral forms symbolizing energy and movement

Roberto Crippa (1921-1972), “Spirali”, 1950.

Spirali” by Roberto Crippa represents a key moment in the artist’s production of the 1950s. In this work, Crippa explores the themes of movement and space through the circular form in a particularly significant way. Executed in oil on canvas, it is characterized by an almost circular gesture, never perfectly round, which generates a spiral that seems to project beyond the surface of the painting.

Born in Monza in 1921 and active until 1972, Crippa studied at the Brera Academy and became associated with the Spatialist movement. Over time, his style evolved from Cubism and figuration toward an abstract and material language, with the “Spirali” series marking this decisive transition.

In this work, the enveloping form and continuity of the line create an effect of depth and dynamism: the spirals trace inward spaces from which rays and tensions emerge, overcoming the two-dimensionality of the canvas. Furthermore, the carefully calibrated colour choices and the modulation of the gesture make visible the passage from immediate painterly action to the idea of space as a concept.

“Spirali” by Roberto Crippa combines formal rigor with poetic strength: a work capable of stimulating both the eye and the mind. Fully consistent with the artist’s vision, the canvas confirms that painting can be experience, matter, and space.
