Richard Woods for Memphis, "Crossing Chopped Stock Lamp (BIG)", painted plywood sculptural lamp, 2008

Richard Woods for Memphis – Milan, “Crossing Chopped Stock Lamp (BIG)”, 2008.

“D“Crossing Chopped Stock Lamp (BIG)” by Richard Woods for Memphis – Milan, created in 2008, represents a meeting between the historic language of the Memphis group and the contemporary research of the British artist. In particular, the work revisits the free use of colour, geometric fragmentation and the strongly graphic character that made Memphis one of the most recognisable phenomena of Postmodern design.

In “Crossing Chopped Stock Lamp (BIG)”, the structure in polychrome-painted plywood is built through vertical and horizontal elements of different sizes and colours. Furthermore, the dark and deliberately irregular outlines accentuate the graphic quality of the composition, recalling the visual language characteristic of Richard Woods. The lamp thus takes on an almost sculptural presence, in which function, colour and decoration become parts of a single design.

Of particular interest is also the relationship of the work with Memphis – Milan. Indeed, Woods reinterprets the group’s legacy through a personal language, maintaining the design freedom and the desire to overcome the boundaries between art, design and functional object that had characterised its research. Overall, the lamp testifies to the continuity and capacity for renewal of the Memphis language within contemporary design.
