René Magritte, “L’Oeil”, from the portfolio Le Lien de Paille.

René Magritte (1898-1967), “L’Oeil”, 1968.

L’Oeil” by René Magritte is one of the most fascinating creations of the master of Belgian Surrealism, in which the act of seeing becomes a symbol of introspection and mystery, dominated by the image of a blue eye enclosed within a perfect circle. The composition invites the viewer to reflect upon the very concepts of vision and perception. It is not merely an anatomical detail, but a window onto the unconscious, a recurring theme throughout Magritte’s artistic practice.

Through an essential yet highly evocative composition, the artist explores the boundary between reality and illusion, confronting the viewer with the enigma of a gaze that both observes and is observed. The delicate tonalities, combined with the precision of the line, create a suspended balance between rationality and dream.

Part of the portfolio Le Lien de Paille, “L’Oeil” transforms an ordinary image into a powerful visual metaphor capable of stimulating both mind and senses. It reaffirms René Magritte as one of the greatest interpreters of Surrealist thought in the twentieth century.
