René Magritte, “L’Art de vivre” (from the portfolio Le Lien de Paille), 1968.

René Magritte (1898-1967), “L’Art de vivre”, 1968.

The work L’Art de Vivre  by René Magritte perfectly exemplifies the Belgian artist’s ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, inviting the viewer to question the reality of appearances. In this composition, a faceless figure dressed in elegant attire is depicted with a large celestial disc bearing human features in place of a head, set against a mountainous landscape. This enigmatic and poetic image evokes the tension between reason and dream, a central theme in Magritte’s artistic vision.

Through a language that is both clear and profoundly symbolic, the artist explores the mysteries of identity and existence, encouraging the viewer to reflect on what lies beyond the visible surface of things. The delicate tonalities and balanced structure of the composition contribute to an atmosphere of quiet introspection, characteristic of much of his work.

With L’Art de Vivre”, René Magritte celebrates the freedom of thought and the wonder of seeing beyond the familiar, presenting life itself as a continuous exercise in imagination and awareness.
