The group of “Twelve Zodiac Signs” created by Pietro Melandri in the 1950s represents a significant example of the mature production of the Faenza artist, a central figure in the revival of twentieth-century Italian ceramics. In fact, Melandri was a leading figure in the renewal of the language of maiolica, combining artisanal tradition and modern sensibility.
The ensemble consists of twelve circular plaques, each dedicated to a zodiac sign, modelled in sculptural relief and enriched with polychrome metallic lustre finishes. However, this is not a simple decorative representation: each element reveals careful research into matter and light. The surfaces, in fact, are characterized by chromatic variations and iridescent reflections, obtained through complex ceramic techniques that enhance the tactile value of the work.
Moreover, the zodiac figures are interpreted through a synthetic yet expressive language, where sign and volumeintegrate in a balanced way. Consequently, the cycle takes the form of a coherent symbolic narrative, capable of combining traditional iconography and contemporary sensibility. At the same time, the relief workmanship gives depth and dynamism to each composition.
Therefore, this work testifies to Melandri’s full maturity, as he distinguished himself, especially in the post-war period, through a refined and experimental production. Moreover, the zodiac theme, recurring in the history of art, is here reinterpreted through a modern decorative vision, attentive both to ornamental function and formal quality. In conclusion, the group highlights a perfect balance between Faenza ceramic tradition and stylistic innovation, making it an ensemble of particular collecting interest.
