The “Togo” set designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset represents one of the most recognizable models of 1970s French design. Presented in 1973, the system was born from research oriented towards new forms of domestic comfort, more informal and closer to the changes in contemporary living.
In this set, composed of two two-seater sofas, an armchair and a pouf, the traditional structure of the sofa is completely overcome. The “Togo” model is in fact without a rigid frame and is based on a low, soft and enveloping form, designed to offer relaxed seating close to the floor. Moreover, the shaped padding and the black leather upholstery accentuate the sculptural character of the set, enhancing the deep folds and quilted course of the surfaces.
From a formal point of view, the design stands out for its immediately identifiable image: rounded lines, low profile and strong horizontality define seating that combines functionality and visual presence. However, despite its informal appearance, the “Togo” retains remarkable design coherence, thanks to the balance between ergonomics, modularity and quality of materials.
This set testifies to an icon of contemporary design, capable of crossing the decades while maintaining its relevance intact. The “Togo” model remains an emblematic example of comfort, innovation and compositional freedom in furniture design of the second half of the twentieth century.
