“Rosa dei Venti” Dining Table by Mario Ceroli, 1970s.

Mario Ceroli (1938), Tavolo “Rosa dei Venti”, Anni ‘70.

The dining tableRosa dei Venti”, designed by Mario Ceroli for Poltronova and produced in Florence during the 1970s, belongs to the “Mobili nella Valleseries, one of the artist’s most celebrated groups of furniture designs.

Ceroli, a leading figure in post-war Italian art, developed from the 1960s onwards a body of work that encompassed sculpture, installation, and design. In particular, during the 1970s, his collaboration with Poltronova led to the creation of furniture pieces that combined industrial production with an artistic language. At the same time, the “Mobili nella Valle” series reflects an interest in primary and symbolic forms.

The use of untreated pine is part of a deliberate choice to emphasise simple materials connected to a natural and archaic dimension. As a result, Mario Ceroli’s table stands midway between a functional object and a sculptural work. “Rosa dei Venti” represents a significant example of Italian Radical Design, based on the integration of function, material, and formal research.
