“Seascape with Sails”, created between circa 1890 and 1895 by Luigi Bertelli, represents a significant example of the Bolognese artist’s landscape painting in his mature phase. The work stands out for its balanced composition, built on the dialogue between sea, sky and coastline.
The marine subject is approached with close attention to atmospheric effects. In fact, the movement of the waves and the warm light of the sunset sky help to create a dynamic yet measured scene. Moreover, the presence of the distant sailsintroduces a discreet narrative element, without interrupting the overall harmony of the landscape.
From a stylistic point of view, Bertelli belongs to the field of late nineteenth-century lyrical realism. However, the work is not limited to a faithful description of reality. On the contrary, through chromatic control and the rendering of light, the artist conveys an emotional vision of the landscape, always maintaining a solid compositional structure.
Luigi Bertelli, active mainly in Bologna, was a central figure in the local artistic panorama between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Therefore, this seascape testifies to his contribution to Italian landscape painting, balanced between tradition and modern sensitivity.
