“Concetto Spaziale”, cardboard work by Lucio Fontana, 1964–65.

Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), “Concetto spaziale”, 1964-65.

The work “Concetto Spaziale” by Lucio Fontana, created between 1964 and 1965, is dominated by a dark oval form, drawn with a decisive gesture, enclosing a light area interrupted by vertical cuts. However, these interventions are not decorative but structural, as they introduce a real discontinuity into the surface.

From a theoretical perspective, the work fully belongs to the research of Spatialism, the movement founded by Fontana, which sought to overcome the traditional limits of two-dimensional representation. As a result, the paper support is no longer a simple surface, but a field of action in which gesture, matter, and void enter into dialogue.

Fontana is a central figure in international twentieth-century art. In particular, during the 1960s, his production on paper developed alongside his work on canvas, maintaining the same conceptual and experimental coherence. Therefore, “Concetto Spaziale” represents a significant example of the mature reflection by Lucio Fontana, in which the sign, the cut, and real space become fundamental tools for redefining the language of contemporary art.
