“The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist” by Luca Giordano constitutes an effective example of Neapolitan Baroque painting of the second half of the seventeenth century, a period in which the artist achieved extraordinary international fame thanks to the speed of execution and great inventive ability that earned him the nickname “Luca works quickly”. Trained in the Neapolitan environment influenced by Jusepe de Ribera and later updated on the Venetian and Roman language, Giordano in fact developed a style characterized by compositional dynamism, chromatic luminosity and strong narrative theatricality.
The work depicts Saint John the Baptist in the act of preaching to the crowds, an evangelical episode that the artist interprets through a scenic construction of great visual impact. However, the composition maintains remarkable narrative fluidity: the Baptist in fact dominates the scene with the eloquent gesture of his outstretched arm, while the crowd is arranged around him in an articulated interplay of gazes and movements.
Moreover, Giordano demonstrates particular skill in the handling of light, which selectively illuminates the main figures emerging from the dark landscape behind them. The broad and vibrant draperies, treated with loose and luminous brushstrokes, contribute to giving energy to the composition and defining the monumentality of the figures.
On the other hand, the artist manages to combine spiritual intensity and narrative immediacy, qualities that made his painting extremely appreciated in the great religious commissions of the time. Overall, “The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist” fully testifies to Luca Giordano’s ability to merge sacred drama, Baroque movement and pictorial luminosityin a scene of strong emotional and visual involvement.
