Helen Konig Scavini "Nella" or "Nasin" polychrome glazed earthenware figure produced by Lenci Turin in 1931.

Helen König Scavini (1886-1974), “Nella or Nasin”, Lenci – Turin.

The figure “Nella or Nasin” created by Helen König Scavini for Lenci represents one of the most recognizable examples of Italian Deco production between the 1920s and 1930s. Founder and creative soul of the Turin manufactory, Helen König Scavini in fact contributed to defining an elegant and modern language, capable of combining decorative taste, attention to fashion and artisanal quality.

In this work, the young female figure is represented in an inclined and spontaneous pose, almost captured in a moment of everyday lightness. However, behind the apparent simplicity of the scene emerges an extremely studied construction: the slender proportions, the delicate face and the sinuous line of the silhouette fully reflect the Art Deco aesthetic, oriented towards formal synthesis and visual refinement.

Moreover, the dress decorated with white and black polka dots constitutes one of the most characteristic elements of the composition. The brilliant polychromy and the graphic contrast of the decorative motif give rhythm to the surface, while the blue details introduce an elegant and measured chromatic accent. The small animal placed at the feet of the figure also helps to create a more narrative and dynamic scene.

From a technical point of view, the slip-cast maiolica terracotta decorated in polychromy under glaze highlights the high level of quality achieved by Lenci production. On the other hand, these sculptures were conceived as true art objects intended for the most up-to-date bourgeois interiors of the period.

Overall, “Nella or Nasin” therefore stands as a work capable of synthesizing modernity, elegance and decorative culture of the Italian twentieth century, still maintaining a strong stylistic recognizability today.
