The “Creola” seating set, designed in 1976 by Giusto Puri Purini and Maurizio Mariani for Vivai del Sud, represents a significant example of 1970s Italian design, a period in which a new sensitivity towards natural materials and informal living solutions emerged. The set consists of a two-seater sofa and two armchairs, made of bamboo and rattan cane, materials chosen not only for their structural qualities, but also for their strong expressive and environmental value.
From a formal point of view, the seats are characterized by an enveloping structure, defined by regular weaves and by a balanced relationship between solids and voids. Moreover, the use of curved bamboo helps to create a soft and continuous language, in line with the design research of Vivai del Sud. At the same time, the padded cushions, conceived as an integral part of the design, ensure comfort and accentuate the chromatic contrast with the wooden structure.
The “Creola” seating set reflects the interest, typical of Roman production of the period, in a Mediterranean and naturalaesthetic, capable of interacting with both indoor and outdoor spaces. Therefore, the ensemble should be interpreted not only as functional furniture, but as the expression of a precise culture of living, attentive to the relationship between man, environment and matter.
