Created in 1968, “Blocco Galla” is a solid wood table-sculpture that exemplarily represents the research of Giuseppe Rivadossi, one of the most authoritative artist-cabinetmakers in Italian sculpture of the second half of the twentieth century. The work belongs to a central moment in his production, when the relationship between function, matter and form became the focus of his work.
First of all, “Galla Block” presents itself as a compact, solid volume, constructed according to a rigorous modular logic. However, while maintaining a clear function of use, the work goes beyond the traditional concept of furniture. In fact, Rivadossi transforms the table into an autonomous sculptural body, where wood is not simply a construction material but a true narrative element. Moreover, the geometric openings and the rhythm of the surfaces articulate the space, suggesting a constant dialogue between solid and void.
During the 1960s, the artist developed a poetics founded on time, memory and craftsmanship, in open opposition to industrial seriality. For this reason, each work is conceived as a unique piece, the result of a slow and conscious process.
